The associations with missions of consultation, coordination and development of palliative care are :
The palliative care federations
There are three of these (one in Flanders, one in Wallonia and one in Brussels). They unite the palliative care organisations in their respective region, are the voices and special representatives for palliative care with the public authorities, and have a scientific mission (training, research, quality aspects).
For federal matters, they come together in an inter-federation.
The palliative care platforms or "associations"
Their main missions are dissemination of the palliative culture to the public, conclusion of collaboration agreements in their territory, updating expertise with regard to palliative care, training volunteers, etc.
There are twenty-five platforms in Belgium (fifteen in Flanders, eight in Wallonia, one for the German-speaking community, and one for the Brussels-Capital Region).
The special situation in Brussels, where the choice was made to establish a single bi-communal, pluralist platform, must be noted.

In Belgium, the palliative care offer is equitably distributed in the different regions of the country, regardless of the care location of the patient (home, hospital, specialised retirement home, etc.). A coherent plan equipped with a comprehensive legislative framework was developed in 1997, thanks to the consultation and combined efforts of the experts in palliative care united in federations, and the Authorities.
This plan includes allocation by geographical territories (groups of approximately 300,000 inhabitants), each equipped with the following care system :
a platform or “palliative care association” ;
a multidisciplinary home support team (2nd line) ;
12 residential palliative care beds (SpS4) ;
a mobile intra-hospital palliative care team in each hospital ;
a palliative function in each specialised retirement home ;
possibly a palliative day care centre.
